Loyal Grandstaff's father said his son's freedoms of religion and speech were both violated. He is reaching out to the school for answers, according to WDAF-TV.
Loyal said he wanted to read the Bible during free time because he feels encouraged by it. He stated that he wasn't reading aloud or sharing the book with any other classmates when his teacher approached and told him to put it away.
I like to read my Bible because it’s a good book. I was just reading, just reading because I had free time. A time to do what I wanted to, so I just broke it out and read.
Loyal's father couldn't understand why his son's choice of reading material was such a big deal to this teacher given the current state of schools in America. “There’s kids walking around disrespecting their teachers, kids walking around cussing and everything else and they’re practically getting into no trouble at all," he argued.
Unfortunately I had to move but I loved this school and the teachers there. It is the best school ever.
a 12year-old Missouri middle-schooler was told by his teacher that reading the Bible during free time is prohibited.
Because this happened before the Christmas break, the family has not been able to communicate with officials, but the principal of the school is aware of the situation and is looking into what exactly happened. It was stated, however, that Bibles are not banned from the school.
